Se requiere extrema precaución al usar coeficientes de fricción. Se recomienda usar referencias independientes adicionales. Para cualquier aplicación específica, el método ideal para determinar el coeficiente de fricción es mediante pruebas. Se incluye una tabla corta encima de la tabla principal para ilustrar cómo el coeficiente de fricción se ve afectado por las películas superficiales. Cuando una superficie metálica está perfectamente limpia en el vacío, la fricción es mucho mayor que el valor normalmente aceptado y puede producirse fácilmente un agarrotamiento.
